Salina Elementary

Free Parent University for young children and parents on April 22 and 29

Dearborn Public Schools Parent University is returning with two sessions on April 22 and 29. This program is FREE to children ages six months to preschool and a parent or caregiver. The program will be held at five locations throughout the district.

Sessions will start at 9:15 a.m. both Fridays at Cotter Preschool, Long Elementary, Maples Elementary, McDonald Elementary and River Oaks Elementary. To reserve your spot, please email bassj@dearbornschools.org or call (313) 827-4616.

Our talented, early childhood teachers from the Great Start Readiness Program preschool will welcome community members and their young children with stimulating activities, providing tips and tricks for parenting, and creating an awareness of how important early learning is for children.

The one hour workshop on April 22nd will be a fun, pajama themed party that centers around self care and healthy living.  During the workshop, young children (ages 6 months- preschool) and families are invited to come dressed in pajamas.  GSRP teachers will facilitate activities to create bedtime routines that involve reading practices appropriate to young children, practice oral health and promote healthy sleep habits.  Young children will be engaged with their families in a song and story and will make a pancake snack.

On April 29th the focus will shift to mathematics in a fun themed birthday party.  Young children will be engaged in one to one correspondence when they use their fine motor muscles to scrape foam shaped stickers onto dots to create a birthday crown.  Young children will practice blowing out candles when they measure how far they can blow paint up a simplified number line.  Children will be encouraged to count and recognize numerals as they poke candles in a playdough birthday cake.  All of these activities will help families understand how learning can be done in ways that are easy to replicate at home.

A free book will be given to each participating child, a themed snack will be provided, and a raffle drawing prize will be given away at each workshop.
