SUBJECT: SEEKING SUPPORT IN REDUCING ASSAULTS AND BATTERY
Recently, we have seen an increase in the amount of assault & Battery incidents throughout the community. These are violent and potentially fatal acts that can be devastating to not only the persons involved but also family members and the community as a whole. A recent review of the latest crime statistics reveals an increase of 6% in Assault and Battery incidents from 2013.
As Chief of Police, I am using all resources available to make the community aware of this situation. Officers from the Dearborn Police Department will be proactively addressing all assault and battery incidents. It is important to note the serious consequences of committing an assault, which include up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine, as well the possibility of civil lawsuits. Bonds for release from jail have also been increased.
Many times family members experience stress and conflict in the household that can lead to a physical altercation. Residents are encouraged to seek assistance from social service agencies such as ACCESS (313-842-7010) and First Step (888-453-5900). These agencies can provide conflict resolution, anger management and other counseling services. Parents can also seek assistance with the school district. They also offer student conflict resolution, anti-bullying information and counseling.
